Let the Sun Shine In…Restoring the Meetinghouse Windows

Constructed along a timeline spanning 175 years, the Moorestown Meetinghouse is lit on all sides by large multi-paned windows. For centuries, the 34 original wooden double-hung windows have bathed the Meetinghouse with light and warmth. They frame the space where Friends gather to experience the Light within each of us.

Today, many of the Meetinghouse windows are broken, most are leaky, and all need carpentry repair. The renovation plan for the Moorestown Meetinghouse currently places window repair in the latter phases of construction. Changes in local weather and increases in fuel costs, however, suggest that we should address our leaky and broken windows now.

There are compelling reasons to restore rather than replace these windows. The antique glass tells the story of our Meeting, and the windows match the building’s style. Custom installed with time-proven craftsmanship, the windows feature old-growth wood, individual parts, and a warranty longer than twenty years. Heating costs are reduced with an estimated break-even period of 50 years in old buildings with restored windows. Restoration aligns with our core value of right stewardship.

Window restoration is a cost- and time-intensive project and we are asking Members to contribute as they are led to preserve the history and the light that shines through our windows. With a lead gift from the D’Olier Foundation, the MMM 2026 Capital Campaign will raise funds to underwrite the repair of the windows, shutters, and window coverings by the summer of 2026.
